Why Does My Dog Keep Getting an Upset Stomach?

Why Does My Dog Keep Getting an Upset Stomach?

I don’t just mean the food in their bowl. I mean the chew after breakfast, the training treats on a walk, the little bit of your dinner, the new topper, and whatever they may have picked up in the park.

It’s very easy to think, “Their food hasn’t changed, so it can’t be that.” But sometimes their food has changed. Just not the bit you think of as a meal.

Look at the whole day

If your dog’s poo is firm on Monday and loose on Tuesday, think about what was different. A big handful of rich treats? A new chew? A larger meal than usual? Did you start several new things at once?

I’d write it down for a week. Food, extras and what their stools were like. You’re looking for a pattern, not trying to make a perfect spreadsheet.

This also stops you from blaming an ingredient without any real evidence. If you switch the main food while continuing to give the same treats, you might miss what’s actually upsetting them.

Give the gut some consistency

My advice is to make changes one at a time. Keep portions sensible, avoid a sudden switch to a completely different food, and give your dog a chance to settle before adding another new product.

I’m a big believer in looking at the quality of the whole diet. A supplement can support digestion, but I would never use one as an excuse to ignore what a dog is eating every day. If you want to add gut support, do it as part of a clear plan so you can see how your dog responds.

A single messy poo after an unusual snack is one thing. If diarrhoea keeps returning, or your dog has blood in their stool, repeated vomiting, pain or a noticeable change in energy, that needs a proper check.

My starting point: Write down everything your dog eats, simplify the extras, and change one thing at a time. Often, the clues are in the everyday routine.

My Food Sensitivity Bundle comes with a plan and gut supporting supplements to take the guess work out of it.
